[The Story] Evaluating Escapist Exercises

I don’t know how much of the introduction to “The Story” will start before John [left] and Trishna [right] meet. It’s an important period, to be sure, rife with rudimentary situations where they both have to learn to tolerate reality. As much as they may want to hide from their situations, bullies, and presents, their adolescences, like our own, is where we form our abilities to evaluate when to fight, flight, or delight in escapism.

[Applied Self-Confidence] Bettering Better Zombie #6

Welcome to the new format! Better Zombie has changed significantly since the last Betzom update. Now that I have an average of 15 essays scheduled to publish, I have more lead time before each essay publishes to be more ambitious with the content or structure. More importantly, I’ve more fully realized how this website can help me achieve my goals: now, I’ll publish two short stories each week, along with two brainstorming updates to “The Story!”

[Sober Living] Addicted to Work

Why do we become addicted to our work? Why do we allow our work and employers to entrench themselves so deeply into our psyches that when we’re in the shower, we give effort to our work, we complain about work to family, and we work when we sleep? Does it fill that void otherwise filled with insecurities and self-loathing? Do we yearn for the stability that comes with employment and the fruits of our labor?

[The Story] Reviews and References

I am inspired by everything. My nebulous memory recalls obscure scenes from movies last watched years back or situations experienced months ago. The resulting recollections create unique new memories. In this collaborative environment, it is, therefore, most important to observe and understand myriad random circumstances. “The Story,” in my initial attempt would proudly wear its references, reflected even in its name “References,” but now as I develop John [bottom-right] and Trishna [bottom-left], that consideration changed.

[Series Review] Golden Kamuy (2018)

Let’s say you’ve got ten minutes to catch the bus and you’re nearly there. Why not enjoy a leisurely scenery-soaked stroll? Golden Kamuy is like that stroll, or, like an action-oriented Mushishi. We follow a motley cadre of characters searching for gold throughout 1900s Hokkaido. Our main character, “the Immortal” Sugimoto, leisurely learns about Ainu culture during his gold-oriented stroll and we, too, learn about the malignment and mystery of Ainu through this sundry stroll.

[Rowing Machine] 2018: Week 27 {235.0}

I strive for independence from external validation. As nice as it is to read positive comments, ruminate on constructive criticism, and receive compensation, I honestly believe all of those vindications mean nothing if you are not content with yourself and what you’re doing. Fitness helps me practice internal validation. When I row with my best effort, it doesn’t matter when the results aren’t great compared to yesterday or your stats, because I’m practicing my independence.

[Series Review] MEGALOBOX (2018)

Let’s say you’ve got ten minutes to catch the bus, you’re nine minutes away, and the only thing preventing you from achieving that goal is fighting through your self-doubt. Megalobox embodies that spirit! We follow the efforts of underground boxer “Joe” as he becomes inspired to attain his goal of freedom through fighting in premiere boxing tournament Megalonia. Joe’s efforts mirror our own. We also fight self-doubt in attempting the impossible to attain our goals!

[Sammohini Arc] Boss Is Away

“Hey, Sammohini.” The voice suddenly appeared after a typing lull, along with her mentoring coworker, Hank. “How urgent is that 1 o’clock?” “Oh, umm… yeah, uhh… that’s a move assessment for Nephrology for next week.” “Can you reschedule it? We’d,” and he looked around the cube farm area before dropping his voice, “like to have a team meeting since Linda and Lisa are both away. We were thinking… Wiles’s…” Before exclaiming, she calmly said, “no worries.”

[The Story] Context and Nuance

“It’s like going into a landscaping project best suited for a rake with a shovel.[1]” “I’d get in there with a backhoe![2]” I prep my writing like landscapers prep the land with a backhoe before using a rake. Some projects just require a light raking or editing. I’m teaching myself how to use the writer’s equivalent of a backhoe because writing John [left] and Trishna’s [right] stories – “The Story” – is like landscaping for someone important.

[Sober Living] My Superpower: Persistence

“If I had a superpower, it’d be persistence.[1]” I’m tested against that seemingly arrogant statement every moment of every day. There will always be reasons to slip. Peace might just be unobtainable through any other means than constant conflict, yet that’s the only way I see that will get me to a place where I won’t feel tempted due to insecurity, doubt, or misery. To persist in the face of adversity is my comfort zone.
