While there’s something to be said for playing life safely, when the opportunity strikes, jump up on life’s stage! Get outside your comfort zone! Even for just a minute. The experience will probably be uncomfortable, you might need to push through fatigue, or embarrass yourself. You might step in spilled beer, get bumped into harmlessly, or get your picture taken. You also might not get the best shot. That’s still better than no shot whatsoever!
WAC 314.11.015 3(g) often causes me to choose reclusion. I am fed up with this! “Employees may not…” “Permit any person consuming, or who has consumed within the licensed premises, any type of marijuana, usable marijuana, or marijuana-infused products to remain on any part of the licensed premises.” While concerts are the riskiest, I’ve smelled cannabis in libraries, restaurants, buses, and everywhere in downtown Seattle. My safest route to avoid imposed psychosis is to stay home.
Physical fitness is a daily decision. While making smart decisions throughout the day to eat better quality foods can help me feel better, I’ve found that exercise more directly inspires my diet. When I haven’t exercised or thought about aspects of my personal fitness, my cravings that day will go toward junk food or impulsively getting a second plate of Thanksgiving dinner. When I have, I’m more interested in eating healthier foods and smaller portions.
Seeing instrumental surf rock band Daikaiju is like stepping into a monster movie. Their fully interactive “attacks” on a venue, ripe for a 360-degree virtual reality music video, invite their audiences to participate in antics like hoisting their drum kit in the air during a performance. These antics would mean nothing if their music suffered to only temporarily ignite the audience’s interest. Fortunately, their antics serve as accurate visual footnotes to their energetic live performances!
Self-confidence might be the hardest thing to acquire. You can work at any menial job to get pocket change. Most information is now free, so you can learn practically anything, except, the most important thing of all: you aren’t worthless. Maybe you’re in a jam. Maybe you’re living well. Maybe you’re just OK. If you accept your core being, the good and bad, then any mistakes you make are permissible. We’re imperfect beings, after all!
There’s a point along your fitness journey where people start noticing. If you work with a professional trainer like I did years ago when I burned 60 pounds in 6 months, the spotlights quickly shine curious optimism on your efforts. That first journey accidentally recessed 67 pounds due to lacking discipline. I’m going at a slower pace for this journey, in ways that should allow my health to shine brightly for years, and people are starting to notice!
It’s always a good idea to follow the laws established by governing bodies. Even if not strictly enforced, laws were made to allow the preservation of peace. How about rules requested by organizations? They’re usually more codes of conduct that range from specific requests that keep areas safe and sound to suggestions that keep polite society comfortable. How about strictly prohibited photography policies at shows? Is there any situation when it’s acceptable to be disobedient?
I didn’t see as many concerts in 2016 as I did in previous years. Maybe career development, working on this site, and an oversaturation of lukewarm concerts in 2015 dissuaded me? I did see some memorable performances in 2016, intend to attend new venues, and especially want to get outside my concert comfort zone in 2017.
