[Applied Self-Confidence] Bettering Better Zombie #6

Welcome to the new format! Better Zombie has changed significantly since the last Betzom update. Now that I have an average of 15 essays scheduled to publish, I have more lead time before each essay publishes to be more ambitious with the content or structure. More importantly, I’ve more fully realized how this website can help me achieve my goals: now, I’ll publish two short stories each week, along with two brainstorming updates to “The Story!”

[Series Review] MEGALOBOX (2018)

Let’s say you’ve got ten minutes to catch the bus, you’re nine minutes away, and the only thing preventing you from achieving that goal is fighting through your self-doubt. Megalobox embodies that spirit! We follow the efforts of underground boxer “Joe” as he becomes inspired to attain his goal of freedom through fighting in premiere boxing tournament Megalonia. Joe’s efforts mirror our own. We also fight self-doubt in attempting the impossible to attain our goals!

Rating: ★★★★★ [5/5]
Spoilers?: Nothing significant (structural commentary)

[Sober Living] Drinking Socializing Norms

“Is that… vodka?[1]” Why is it weird going to a bar or being in any social gathering and drinking water or any flavored drink that won’t influence your thoughts? Are we so damaged as a society, or insecure as individuals, that we can’t just hang out with new people without getting wasted? We don’t even ask to receive our equivalent ‘drinking age verified’ bracelets. They’re just given to us on presumption. Why oblige alcohol norms?

[The Story] Years of Adversity

How many years of adversity would you endure to achieve your goals? Constant jeering, doubt from everyone you know, and a growing sense that regardless of how much effort you put into trying to overcome your current situation, survive, and profoundly thrive, carving out a niche for yourself, that it’s possible it won’t happen? John (left) and Trishna (right) will face adversity frequently in “The Story.” How will they- and we- endure to ensure victory?

[Grime/Glitter] Animosity Toward Entertainment

We’ve arrived at such an entertainment saturation that we can easily discard anything even remotely disinteresting. I’m just as guilty as any of us. Removing anything that could distract me from accomplishing my goals could be a succinct explanation of my work ethic, and yet, there are proper ways to handle our discarded distractions. Now is the best time to consider the prevention of consuming entertainment wastefully, because we’re only getting more saturated by entertainment!

[The Story] Ten Dollar Coupon

“Are there any sales or discounts going on?[1]” “Yeah… I can see about giving you ten dollars off.[2]” If “The Story” is essentially analogous to the real world, and John [leftmost] and Trishna [left] are attempting their best to navigate the world without getting screwed over, how would they – and we – go about it? John learned half of an effective strategy for negotiation implied in the quote above and Trishna learned the other half. Together?

[The Story] Fossils of Cultural Dinosaurs

We must follow sometimes cultural norms and other times forge our own paths. When do we decide between the two? I’ve always been guided by the path that yields the better results for my goals and aspirations. If I see the fossils of some failed beast, I steer clear, otherwise I’ll proceed toward a thriving dinosaur of wonder. How about Trishna and John? How much of “The Story” balances writing norms and blazing new trails?

[Sober Living] Addressing Root Issues

The situation left me so angry! Inebriation is never the solution for these situations. That’s not addressing the issue. Instead, I will fully recreate the events in my head while exercising. I’ll remember every detail, conversation, and emotion. Once I’ve arrived at the root cause, my mind will become once again calm. Here’s how I break through the water to get to the root cause of the issue taking down my post and my stability.

[The Story] Props and Incongruities

“I collect LEGO to use as props for my big story. But only the ones that fit into their world. They’re probably not big into monster trucks, so I would have no need for this.[1]” My customized LEGO minifigures, showing main characters Trishna (left/above) and John (left/below), have paid for themselves and any prop sets tenfold for their effectiveness in building ideas within the world of “The Story.” Here’s why you should consider similar props.

[Sober Living] Delaying Immediate Pleasure

It’s taken me 20 years to kick this addiction. Or, at least, not giving in daily. Since it’s difficult for me to write about this topic, this essay will probably be good for me. Unfortunately, I can’t find an easy way to say the problem directly. Similar to writing “My Penultimate Trip,” it’s a topic I’ve avoided, and I felt much better after writing that essay. Here goes: I no longer indulge in viewing pornography daily!
