[The Story] Purpose of Birthdays

If there were one day of the year to practice healthy self-respect, it’d be your birthday. We continually sacrifice ourselves for others throughout the year. Why not reclaim our autonomy on our birthdays? Do what you enjoy doing most, do nothing, or do something ambitious! In “The Story,” Trishna [right] and her family have that attitude toward birthdays, so when John [left] has his first birthday as part of “the family,” it’s a culture shock.

[The Story] Cluttered Living Space

I don’t completely endorse the idea that settings are like characters. While someone’s workspace or personal space can convey surface-level symbolic meaning over personality, what is tolerable or not, and more, I don’t think it’s a comprehensive glimpse into a person’s, or character’s, mind. Still, in “The Story,” there are some key settings that could provide interesting anecdotal information into the minds of Trishna [left] and John [right]. Let’s declutter the psychology from the physical.

[The Story] “The Story’s Imaginarium”

Where do we store our imagination? Do we go about our days observing our reality only to occasionally dip our toes into the vastlessness of a communal pool of imagination? Are creatives and worldbuilders just siphoning that imagination into sippy cups we all can enjoy while mostly-engaged with reality? The more focus I place on “The Story,” and the more time I spend trying to create it, the more I wonder about these abstract concepts.

[The Story] Incubating The Scene

Like a brainstorming incubus pinning me down when I am in a half-dazed stupor, many scenes from “The Story” will appear as vestiges of memories appearing more vivid than many memories I’ve actually experienced. I’ve never experienced anything quite like what happened here to John, right, in a pneumonia-induced daze, with Trishna desperately trying to keep him warm. I just know that when I’m in that half-dazed slumber, this memory or scene will often appear:

[The Story] Loving “The Scene”

I’ve been procrastinating on writing “The Story” because I can’t write concisely nuanced enough yet to do it all justice. There’s an early scene codenamed “The Scene” that drives Trishna (right) and family three hours away to collect John (left). “The Scene,” and therefore “The Story,” would fall flat if I wrote it today. I don’t know when, or if, I’ll develop that skill. Loving the time until then is the only way to succeed.

[The Story] Words Mean Nothing IV

Words mean nothing between Trishna (left) and John (right). As main characters of “The Story,” they’ve built rapport via thousands of digital words and hours of phone conversation before ever meeting. While other side characters may falter over minor miscommunication misunderstandings, typically, they understand each other almost subconsciously. That might be the cosmic romantic ideal, so I’m taking my time to explore their personalities and understand their faults fully, before I begin writing their story.

This scene in “The Story” concluded a recent float tank session like a vague memory from a life I never lived. Shortly after John (right) arrives at Trishna’s family farm, her father Divit (center) has “the chat” he has with anyone that is considering becoming close friends with any of his daughters or sons. Let’s explore how I’m building this scene, so once I write it formally, it will have the appropriate emotion and resonance.

[The Story] Possibilities of Prostheses

After dislodging “The Story” from my memories last year, I’ve been busy! I’m spending most of my “down time” learning how to tell this story: analyzing good storytelling, critiquing bad storytelling, writing almost daily, and anything to improve my writing toolbox. After realizing that the main characters would have physical impairments, I realized I had to educate myself on how to “do it right,” so let’s consider: under-representation, invisibility, “hiding impairments,” and their world’s prosthetics.

[The Story] Sick? Healthy Living!

While soaking in miniature houses at the fair, observing cool LEGO sets in stores, and attending concerts, I was brainstorming ideas for “The Story” as I always do. This week’s focus was worldbuilding the Lanchester farm. Trishna was born and raised there. Unfortunately, the implications of some mild bug has taken some of my focus away, so let’s explore how John (laying “in bed”) and Trishna help each other through their sicknesses, to get healthy.

[The Story] First Family Dinner

Rather than focusing on character traits, this week’s brainstorming update to “The Story” will focus on a scene that’s cooking in my mind’s creative oven. Let’s see about collecting the ingredients for one of the first events following ‘the scene,’ or the catalytic events that throw everything into motion, where John (right) is invited over to Trishna’s family for dinner.
