[Rowing Machine] Two Five Five

I’m starting to see a difference! If I were to say that I have the body of a fat rower now, that’d be kind of pretentious, but it’s the best way for me to phrase it. I was merely overweight before, deceptively obscured perhaps as credit to the fitness of my early 20s, and now I’m starting to see some of that same fit physique. Other than vanity, I have seen other results as well.

[Grime/Glitter] Overcoming Writer’s Block

“I have nothing to write today.” That thought stopped me in my tracks during one of my better rowing sessions. What a challenge! Let’s walk around the idea of writing blocks until we find a point to start chipping away what stops us. If writing blocks are anything like sculpting blocks, then it could be as easy as screwing inhibition and starting, although if it were that easy, then there’d be nothing after the jump.

[Applied Psychology] Establishing A Baseline

During photography for an upcoming Daredevil action figure review, I lost grip of my lamp, and knocked over most of the toys. It happens. Nothing broke. Just extra reposing time. This was becoming a trend, so I said “enough!,” and realized a way to prop up the lamp. Easy enough. It’s just all too often, I think we wait well past that moment of frustration to consider our foundation. Shall we muse on cementing baselines?

[The Story] ‘Techno-Techno Scientific’ Worldbuilding

Last week’s brainstorming update to The Story led to storms of idea static surging my brain. It’s tempting to write these narrative ideas about the Lanchester Farm, interactions, and potential spoilers. I know better. Working with an “over-prepare, then go with the flow” style of writing yields my best results, so let’s borrow a line from The Incal, and explore some of the ‘techno-techno scientific’ details of the world Trishna (left) and John live in.

[Negotiation Etiquette] Highballing and Lowballing

If there’s one common theme running throughout this etiquette series, it’s the DBAD concept: Don’t Be A Dick. That might be difficult to navigate when negotiating the price of anything from a cheap action figure or vehicle to salary because most people want a good deal. Markets change and the value of a vehicle or marketable skill can depreciate greatly. Let’s explore, among other ideas, three examples of successfully or unsuccessfully paying the asking price.

[Concert Review] Testament, Sepultura (2017)

One problem with enjoying a wide variety of music is that inevitably two performers will play on the same night. Since I’ve seen both Testament and Acid Mothers Temple live, it was just more practical properly seeing Testament live since I already bought tickets, even though I’m a bigger AMT fan. As it turns out, Year of the Cobra was performing the same night, so regardless I would have been missing out. Was it worthwhile?

[Rowing Machine] .250 1/4″

I might change this weekly column’s title. The main factor is how much value I think publishing these weekly updates as a self-help book could bring to a wider audience. It might have too many random philosophical musings and it’s also not as exciting a journey as the one I made in my 20s, the “Sixty Pounds in Six Months” Story, yet my 30s casual weight-loss pace could help others start drilling toward their goals.

[Applied Psychology] Why We Complain

I think we complain when we’re too emotionally invested in some logical frustration. It’s the thorn in the side except we’re so overwhelmed by the situation that we don’t know what to do. Certainly not letting others help! We might even lash out against them. It’s natural and cathartic to complain to others. It’s just that we should always try to complain to attain remedies to our ailments, rather than repeatedly replay our dissatisfactions, infinitely.

[Concert Review] Everclear, Fastball (2017)

If I could have told myself before getting tickets how disappointingly unprofessional Everclear act, along with how seeing them live would tarnish my opinions of their music, I might have passed. Might! It’d be unrealistic living in that idyllic world where I’d only see five-star bands because enjoying this world’s flavors includes seeing bands fall from grace. There was at least one upside to this overwhelming downside, as will typically happen in situations like this.
