[The Story] Trading Away Ambitions?

Every morning, the same characters pop into my head. It’s not always John [left] or Trishna [right], but it’s always someone related to them in some way, whether it’s Pollyanna, Sammohini, Jane, or someone that in some way connects to either of them. I find it more funny than annoying or disturbing, because what other characters would I trade in their place? They’re the stars of “The Story!” Could I possibly trade “The Story” away?

[Float Tank] Your Personal Therapist

Besides the healing physicality of sensory deprivation, meeting my personal therapist – myself – has been the biggest benefit I’ve gained from floating. To really meet yourself, you have to come to terms with your greatest failures and your most benign successes. You can’t lie to this therapist. Conversely, nothing is lost in the translation from your psyche to your spoken language and back. It is difficult peering behind the masks we subconsciously wear, but it’s worthwhile.

[Applied Self-Confidence] Two-Year Anniversary

“Have you noticed any changes with me over the last two years?” “I’m not sure. I don’t have a very good memory about that sort of thing.[1,2]” It’s been two years since I started Better Zombie. Then, I inconsequentially wasted time and money for hedonistic reasons. Now, I constantly strive to better myself, my work, and my environment through each of my writings. I’m still hedonistic, sure, I just act with more purpose. Let’s time-travel:

[Rowing Machine] 2018: Week 26 {234.5}

Fitness instills this sense of discipline: minor inconveniences will not impede major progress! Throughout any typical set, if all goes fine, there shouldn’t be any long-term strains or short-term pains. There shouldn’t, at least, other than maybe the mild sting of moving your muscles. Once that soreness is gone, all that’s left is the single-minded focus on your objective: completing the set/goal. It may not be great, or good, but the result will be complete.

[The Story] Chilling and Relaxing

The characters and people that inspire me have figured out parts of themselves. Whether conscious or subconscious, they know what they like, dislike, their ambitions, and how much they can realistically accomplish. Watching action heroes mow down everything in their path doesn’t inspire me because there’s no dramatic tension and release. They aren’t believable without a cool-down release period! In “The Story,” after working toward their ambitions, how do Trishna (left) and John (right) unwind?

[Float Tank] Ask Yourself: Why?

I don’t meditate like most people. Traditional practice asks that you should empty your mind, clear your thoughts, and calmly sit. While I’ve had some success with this method for reaching thought equilibrium, I’ve had more success in float tanks (or when I have downtime) letting the errant thoughts freely roam, with the most success occurring after going in with challenging questions that need time to develop, like a photo of an unclaimed optimal future.

[Sober Living] Floating Isn’t Psychedelic

Float tanks just host isolated meditative environments. There’s no prerequisite to get stoned, nor are you forced to do anything, other than perhaps relax. Sure, you can keep the tank lid open and some tanks can play music. Otherwise, it’s just you and your mind. I’ve found that with my sensory inputs dampened by the tank environment, I can conceptualize bigger or broader ideas, or I can address deep rooted psychological issues. Nothing psychedelic, man…

[The Story] Don’t Hurt Her

This scene in “The Story” concluded a recent float tank session like a vague memory from a life I never lived. Shortly after John (right) arrives at Trishna’s family farm, her father Divit (center) has “the chat” he has with anyone that is considering becoming close friends with any of his daughters or sons. Let’s explore how I’m building this scene, so once I write it formally, it will have the appropriate emotion and resonance.

[Float Tank] Insurance to Jump

We’re taught to only go for the sure shots, play it safe, and at all costs do not step outside your comfort zone! I got into floating after seeing a sandwich board on my lunchtime walks, and after some research, I jumped in. That business recently stepped toward inviting sensory deprivation chambers into everyone’s comfort zones by working with health insurers to provide discounts. Maybe doctors will prescribe float sessions like they prescribe chiropractic sessions?

[Rowing Machine] Two Five Three [2]

I’ve been steadily getting heavier after I stopped rowing heavier 5 minute rowing sets. Starting in late March, I weighed 267. Using only the fortnightly titles, here’s how my weight progressed: 260, 256, 255, 254, 253, 252, 251, 249, 247250, 246, 248, 250, and I weighed in at 253 pounds on Tuesday morning. Now that I have exacting data showing that I need to burn more calories, or consume less calories, I can use that information to make the necessary changes for my fitness. Fortunately, it isn’t all doom below.
