[Downsizing Zeal] Meant Something Once

Somewhere between the concert where I acquired this piece of shiny plastic – maybe at the Marilyn Manson show, or maybe a Sabaton show – and its final resting place, in this pile of garbage, grimed by months spent in a greasy box full of dirty tools and assorted items from deep in my old basement, I lost this confetto’s meaning. If only I’d tucked it away in some album or attached a note, right? Probably not…

[Sober Living] Day of Clutch-ening

The day before I sobered up is one I’ll always remember, not so much sequentially, but more cerebrally than that. I was working at the thrift store at the time, directionless, unmotivated, blaming others for the problems I wasn’t addressing, and just squandering my life. It was a difficult job. When I wasn’t jumping into moldy trailers or being lambasted for working “slowly,” I was trash-compacting high-quality goods. Then… maybe a glimpse into something greater…

[Applied Psychology] Sabaton Concert Review (2018)

Life is a rollercoaster, with the occasional isolating feeling that what you’re going through is unique to the history of humanity. While no one has been through your exact life’s experiences, there have been many brave individuals that have braved through circumstances far worse. When I listen to Sabaton or see them live (4th time now!), their lyrics detailing historic battles remind me to press forward, and their music inspires me to address life’s stresses!

[21 Concert Reviews] 2nd Fall 2017 Review Compilation

Attending concerts is therapeutic for me. When all goes well, I’m permanently motivated! Even when I must invent a new rating variable to express my contempt toward a performance, it’s usually worth the inconvenience of leaving my comfort zone to hang out with old friends, meet new acquaintances, or encounter interesting side stories. Seeing a leashed dog at a show was weird and that it wasn’t obviously a service or therapy dog was weirder still…

[Concert Reviews] 1st Fall 2017 Review Compilation

This review compilation format is working out better than I thought! Considering the sheer volume of photos I take at concerts (366 photos, totalling 1.02GB), it’s easy just to upload my favorite photos from each band to TwitterInstagram has a terrible, mobile-only upload format, so I infrequently post there. It’s just too bad I took too many gambles on shows with only a few actually being worth attending. Guess you gotta give everything a go…

[Concert Review] Melvins (2017)

(The) Melvins have the musicianship and showmanship that could have made them the biggest band in the world. If they cared. They would have been bigger than Nirvana if they removed anything weird about their slightly inaccessible brand of heavy rock. They have the relentless work ethic to compete with The Beatles. Would compromising their sound be worth the money and fame? Would they still be the same Melvins? Or would they fade from relevance?

[Concert Review] Testament, Sepultura (2017)

One problem with enjoying a wide variety of music is that inevitably two performers will play on the same night. Since I’ve seen both Testament and Acid Mothers Temple live, it was just more practical properly seeing Testament live since I already bought tickets, even though I’m a bigger AMT fan. As it turns out, Year of the Cobra was performing the same night, so regardless I would have been missing out. Was it worthwhile?

[Concert Review] Reel Big Fish and Anti-Flag (2017)

Even if you’ve seen a band before and enjoyed them, you should always go in with low expectations. Either they or the other bands on the bill could disappoint. There is also not enough conversation about how boring concerts can be: the downtime before the show, breakdown and setup between bands, and even during the show if the band doesn’t engage the audience. I’ve seen Anti-Flag now three times. How did they fair?
